Cape Breton Craft Gallery

Fibre Loft | Photo by Arts NorthSince 1980 Arts North has offered to the public an ever-increasing collection of juried craftworks created here on Cape Breton Island by talented resident artisans.

From its construction in the late 70’s, Arts North has steadfastly clung to two criteria for the inclusion of work in the retail collection. The work must be:
  • Made on Cape Breton Island
  • Of a quality high enough to pass Arts North’s jurying process
In recent years, as more than two dozen artisans have been attracted to display their work for retail sale in the gallery, a theme of environmental appreciation has begun to emerge.  Now, a walk through the gallery results in the realization of the wide range of talent possessed by artisans residing on Cape Breton, as well as the variety in which they interpret their love of the Island’s beauty.

Whales carved from driftwood, prints showcasing the wildflowers of the area, baskets woven from beachgrasses, pottery with shorebirds, moose or whales as its main theme, jewellery that incorporates driftwood or beachglass into its design, watercolour paintings of solitary beaches and looming mountains…all are evidence of the extraordinary influence Washbasin and pitchter hummingbird | Photo by Arts NorthCape Breton holds upon its artisans, and of how they respond to this influence.

For visitors wishing to experience the island’s largest collection of exclusively resident-produced art- and craftwork, Arts North is a must see!

The gallery, located at the northern tip of the Cabot Trail, is open from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. June through October.World wide shipping is available.
